The University of Virginia (also The University, Mr. Jefferson's University, or Virginia; often abbreviated as U.Va. / UVa / UVA) is a public research university located in Charlottesville, Virginia, founded by Thomas Jefferson. Conceived by 1800 and established in 1819, it is the only university in the United States to be designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, an honor it shares with nearby Monticello.  The Virginia Cavaliers are the athletic teams officially representing the University of Virginia in college sports. The Cavaliers participate in the NCAA's Division I Atlantic Coast Conference in 25 varsity sports.
