University of Washington, founded in 1861, is a public research university in Seattle, Washington, United States. UW is the largest university in the northwestern United States and one of the oldest public universities on the west coast. UW students, sports teams, and alumni are called Washington Huskies, and often referred to metonymically as "Montlake," due to the campus's location on Montlake Boulevard N.E. The husky was selected as the school mascot by student committee in 1922. The sports teams participate in the National Collegiate Athletic Association's Division I-A and in the Pacific Ten Conference.
